ABOUT US

The Transport Department was originally under the Police Department. In 1979, it was bifurcated from the Police Department with the creation of the Directorate of Transport.

The roles and responsibilities of the Transport Department are multifaceted, and the workload has increased significantly in recent years. Most of the activities of the Transport Department are non-plan in nature and can be broadly divided into two categories: (i) Public delivery services, such as granting driving licenses, vehicle registration, route permits, providing heli service, revenue collects through motor vehicle taxes, fees, and fines; (ii) Enforcement of provisions in the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, among others.

Major Activities

  • Vehicle and Driving License related: The main activity of the Transport Department is to administer, regulate and control Motor Vehicles by way of registration of vehicles, issue of Driving Licenses, granting of Road Permits for transport vehicles, fostering and nurturing the development and growth of Road Transport Services in the State, revenue collects by way of Motor Vehicle Tax, etc. Providing Pool Cars for use by VIPs, Ministers, State Guests and Dignitaries is another important activity of the Department
  • Civil Aviation: The MHA Helicopter subsidy scheme is being operated by the State Government through M/s Global Vectra Helicorp Ltd. The operational cost for the scheme is shared between Centre & State in the ration of 75:25.

–           Under this scheme, State is providing Passenger Helicopter service in the State connecting important district headquarters of Jiribam, churachandpur, Kangpokpi & Senapati, Tamenglong, Tengnoupal and Ukhrul District of the State.

–           Further, the State is also operating the inter-state Helicopter service from Imphal – Churachandpur (Manipur) – Mualpui (Aizawl), Mizoram and Dimapur, Nagaland, since the 27th September, 2023 and 1st November, 2023 respectively.

Mission & Vision : In order to facilitating easier and faster transportation for residents and promoting economic activities. This initiative is supported by the Ministry of Home Affairs under a subsidy scheme, reflecting a commitment to improving accessibility in the North Eastern Region.
